The Greek word metabolē meant originally to change and, literally, to throw over. In times of worldwide human-made transformations, climate change and ecological awareness, expanding and exploding the notion of metabolism seems to be crucial to understand present and future politics. The exhibition investigates the understanding of ‘metabolism’ in contemporary art in a dialogue with philosophical and scientific research beyond Eurocentric rationalization.
Biological metabolism is a process that constitutes living beings in their continuous exchange with their environment. Photosynthesis, for instance, struggles to capture and condense solar energy at the basis of the food chain that sustains the whole biosphere. For the parasitic relation of terrestrial life with the outside cosmos, French philosopher Michel Serres in his book The Parasite once defined the sun as our energetic horizon and the very ‘ultimate capital’.
Like many other scientific ideas, as soon as the concept of metabolism emerged in the 19th century chemistry and biology, it generated a contagious fascination in art and politics. Marx himself registered the ‘metabolic rift’ provoked by the industrial revolution and envisioned a ‘social metabolism’ long before environmentalism. However today the human appears to be made also of the non-human, of a heterogeneous stratification of minerals and microorganism, including machines, synthetic materials and immaterial data.
The exhibition The Ultimate Capital is the Sun brings together artists, philosophers, scientists and curators to explore various grounds of metabolism with no desire to establish a centre of gravity.

Das griechische Wort metabolē bedeutet ursprünglich ‚verändern‘, und wörtlich, ‚umstürzen‘. In Zeiten globaler, von Menschen verursachter, klimatischer und gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen erscheint eine Erweiterung der Idee des Metabolismus zentral für das Verständnis gegenwärtiger und zukünftiger Politiken zu sein. Die Ausstellung untersucht, wie das Denkmodell ‚Metabolismus‘ in der Gegenwartskunst verstanden wird und tritt dabei in einen Dialog mit wissenschaftlicher Forschung jenseits eurozentrischer Perspektiven.
Im biologischen Metabolismus (Stoffwechsel) werden Lebewesen durch einen permanenten materiellen Austausch mit ihrer Umwelt konstituiert. So steht am Anfang der Nahrungskette der Prozess der Fotosynthese, die die Sonnenenergie einfängt, verdichtet und damit die gesamte Biosphäre versorgt. In seinem Buch Der Parasit bezeichnet der französische Philosoph Michel Serres die Sonne – in Hinblick auf das parasitäre Verhältnis des irdischen Lebens zum Kosmos – als unser energetischer Horizont und ‚höchstes Kapital‘.
Wie viele andere wissenschaftliche Ideen wurde das Konzept des Metabolismus, als es in der Biologie und Chemie des 19. Jahrhunderts auftauchte, zu einer Art intellektuellem Virus, dessen Faszinationskraft sich rasch in Kunst und Politik verbreitete und alle gängigen linearen Vorstellungen des Lebens durchbrach. Marx selbst konstatierte einen „metabolischen Riss“, der durch die industrielle Revolution hervorgerufen wurde und zielte auf einen ,sozialen Metabolismus‘ lange vor der Entstehung eines modernen Umweltbewusstseins. Heute scheint das Menschliche jedoch auch aus Nichtmenschlichem, aus heterogenen Schichten von Mineralien und Mikroorganismen zu bestehen; dazu gehören Maschinen, synthetische Materialien und immaterielle Daten.
Die Ausstellung The Ultimate Capital is the Sun bringt Künstler_innen, Philosoph_innen, Wissenschaftler_innen und Kurator_innen zusammen, um die unterschiedlichen Felder des Metabolismus zu erforschen, ohne ein Gravitationszentrum erzeugen zu wollen.
